Haynes manuals are under a fiver on Ebay and have wiring diagrams. Pre 90
manuals are cheaper and will do you fine.

IIRC, yes, they are.

The one that is blown :-). 8 rings a bell, but that might be me
remembering a MK1, so no guarantees.

Get a haynes manual. I sold mine ages ago :-(.

Yes they are, one of the permanent live feeds, the fuse boxes do start
having problems on the older golfs, I had to resort to taking mine to
the sparkies about 3 times in 6 years and I'm not to bad with electrics,
but mine had a few probs that had me confused.

Mk1's had fudbox problems too. Mine did after a water leak. The most
confusung one was that it started stalling when put in reverse (and this
was a manual car).
It turned out the reverse lamps and the idle cut-off valve in the carb
were fed by the same fuse, which was corroded. Putting the extra load of
the reverse lamps on it dropped the voltage enough to close the valve.

Yeah my most interesting problem was actually 'after' an auto
electrician had had his hands on it, though I never got round to going
back round and giving them hell. I'd had a burnt out lighting wire
replaced, and then unrelated it the car stated cutting out at random
intervals, or when you accelerated hard, interesting reversing on the
starter motor as a 38 tonner approaches. After much f.cking about, I
ultimately I found out the sparky hadn't put the box back right, so it
was attached on the right side, but hanging lose on the left side, the
fuel pump feed comes out the top left of the box, so as the box rocked,
it was pushing up on the bulkhead and pulling the wire away from a
contact.

finaly got it sorted,
brought manual from car boot, found out that whoever owned the car
before me had bodged his own connections on and had wires twisted
together in two places down the same wire and the furthest one back was
plainly sh.t. brought some spades and all is now dandy.

What fuse does what is printed on the inside of the fusebox lid. Doesn't get
much simpler...
