Or the coil itself may be broken. Or the key could have failed. Coil is
quite common though.
The battery in the keyfob has no bearing on the immobiliser. The
immobiliser chip is powered by the coil, which then reads it. Lot's of
VW keys with no remote and therefore no battery have the immobiliser chip.

Cheers guy's, I was pretty sure this was the case, clutching at straws
really, it's very intermittent, so could well be a dodgy connection....
More research and it seems that older A3's are prone to this failure!!
Out comes the meter again!
bit like rechargeable electric toothbrushes... charged via induction via the
coil in the base of the errr... base!
