OK folks

Son's A3 has suddenly started err... not starting very well, the immobiliser
dash lamp is flashing, then after a while it goes out and the car will start
and run fine.

Does anyone know if the ign key's battery (for the torch) also supply's
current to the key's immobiliser circuit, or is the circuit passive and not
need volts???

i.e. if we change the battery will the problem go away????

btw, he has no spare key!

you said audi.
1) its scrap.
2) the connector by the ignition barrel that has the rf coil, is loose.

Or the coil itself may be broken. Or the key could have failed. Coil is
quite common though.

The battery in the keyfob has no bearing on the immobiliser. The
immobiliser chip is powered by the coil, which then reads it. Lot's of
VW keys with no remote and therefore no battery have the immobiliser chip.

Cheers guy's, I was pretty sure this was the case, clutching at straws
really, it's very intermittent, so could well be a dodgy connection....
More research and it seems that older A3's are prone to this failure!!
Out comes the meter again!

bit like rechargeable electric toothbrushes... charged via induction via the
coil in the base of the errr... base!

I had this problem on my 99 Mk4.  Last year I changed the battery (yes, the
main 12v Lead Acid one under the bonnet) and it hasn't happened since.

Strange.
