Why would a brand new car require a scan with vag-com.  Take it back to the
dealers?

Maybe they want to change some of the default settings without getting
charged £30 a mouse click like I did?

Can't you change some of the basic settings with MFD (in dash display), like
on VW's with the Highline mfd?

Well I don't know about the OPs A3, I was just speaking from my experience
of my new Touran.  Not all models have the facility to change any of the
settings.  If you don't have the facility then you're at the mercy of the
stealers if you don't have access to VAG-COM.

Any VW with the "Highline" MFD (a £45 option) can adjust basic settings.  As
Tim says, if you don't have the highline you have to pay £100 for the
stealer to do it.
