L Reg 1800 VW Vento

My electric sunroof has gone doolally!

For a while it didnt seem very keen to close, it didnt seem to close evenly.
One side would stick as the other carried on moving normally.

Then, about a week ago it wouldnt close the last six inches or so!  I
manually closed it and now it does nothing!
When i tried to manually open it, again, it does so skew wiffly...if you
know what I mean!  One side stays still while the other moves....then it
gets VERY stiff so i stop winding.  This happens when its only three or four
inches open
I'm afraid to push it too hard in case i damage something.
I'm hoping someone will read this and think "a yes, happened to me last
month...all you gotta do is......etc"

It happened to me too :) all you gotta do is change the "carrier unit"
in the sunroof .. it's one piece of metal (actually two , one on each
side). They're probably broken and need changing .. In Romania they
cost about 65 EURO a piece , so get crackin' :)

Yea but HOW?
Like I said, when I try to open the sunroof with the winder thing it goes so
far then gets VERY stiff!  I
'm afraid to push it too far just in case i do even more damage!

Doesn't sounds like you can do it yourself, I would take it to a vw
specialist, incase you damage it badly costing you more in the end.

Hey, I MIGHT be able to do it!  MAYBE I'm really good with cars, you never
know!
I'm sure with some hints and tips etc I could at least try!

Sounds like something is physically getting in the way of you manually
winding it back further.

What does it feel like when you get to the point of difficulty ? is it
impossible to carry on going or you get the feeling you will snap something
?

Sun roofs can be a bit of a pig

As I'm only winding it with the little winder thing it gets VERY stiff, very
quickly.  It open about three inches or so before this happens. It seems to
be going be further and faster one way than the other...it doesn't go back
straight.  AND its REALLY sunny today too!

Have you tried having someone gently push it in a straight line while
operating the winder?

Audi A3 windows jam in a similar way
(http://www.piglet-net.net/tech/cars/a3-window.html)
and stick down due to the mechanism breaking, but can be persuaded back
up with some assistance.

I'd geuss you might get to see the carrier or the fixing bolts if you
can persuade it back. You might want to pick a dry day, just in case though.
