Just picked up a 1997 caravelle with about 120,000 miles.

Notice that when starting from cold, a fair bit of noise, an uneven
clattering type of sound.

Is this normal for this type of engine?

After about 5 minutes, it goes away and is quiet from then on.

Is it diesel or petrol?

Is it from the top or the bottom of the engine?

I'll take a guess at hydraulic tappets. What engine is it?

Sorry, should have mentioned, 2.4 diesel, which brings me to another
point, are there a few variants of this engine?  Anyway, does have a
sort of tappet sound about it.

I'm quite certain this is a hydraulic tappet (or more than one).
Suggest you change the oil after using good engine flush; make sure the
engine is hot. Replace with good quality synthetic. If this doesn't work,
given the mileage, it could be a faulty one, but they are pretty reliable.
