Im looking for a diesel engine for my 82 golf cabriole. Does any one
know what will fit eg are mk1, 2, 3 golf engines the same? I was told
montego gear boxes fit on vw's do thier engines? any help much
appreciated.
Depends on your present engine. If it's a 1.3 or 1.4 then forget about it.
If not then use a mk 1, 2.

This is an educated guess...
A MK1 golf diesel would fit in quite easily if you could find a MK1
diesel as a donor car and get all the bits from that, a Mk2 turbo
probably wouldn't give much trouble. I daresay a TDI could be fitted,
but would be more difficult again. The basic block isn't that different
between any of them, but it's all the other bits that will give you
trouble. I've read of a Mk2 turbodiesel in a scirocco, which of course
is mechanically very similar to your cabrio, and apparently it wasn't
too hard.
Certain Montego and Maestro cars used VW gearboxes- but not all of them.
I daresay you could make a Montego diesel fit if you really wanted, and
had lots of time and money, but you'd have to be mad. It would be a long
way from a straight swap, a VW engine would fit much easier, and lets
face it, is a lot better too.
I have to ask why though. If your cabrio is at all in nice nick it would
be much better with a standard engine, even though I'm a diesel fanboy.
I do think it would be kind of fun with a PD130 or 150 TDI though.

Thanks for the help, I think il be trying for a TDI. The car is'nt to
bad for its age, but the engine has many problems! I keep hearing of
diesel engines running on chip fat, thought id give it a go over the
summer. Im an engineering student so if I manage to make it work it
will look good on my c.v.

The TDI will be more work, but a better result. You will need to get the
engine, gearbox, clutch, engine ECU, and immobiliser at least.
Good luck.

I will be buying a full car so the above parts should'nt be a problem.
Thanks again

f.ck off you f.cking satanist bastard. The 8V digifant engine will easily do
50mpg if you insist on swapping engines, and it'll actually go well.

My 8v has a 2.0 digifant engine and even that'll do 50+ on a run.
Besides, running a Golf TDi on chipfat is a bad idea.
