Hi all
My wife has an 02 Polo 1.4. I have had the bonnet up once or twice to put
oil and water in but that's about it.
Today a silly light has come on and the engine is running rough.
Give it a try and obviously a plug or lead has failed and it is only firing
on three cylinders.
No problem hoik the bonnet open and check the plugs and leads. Not exactly
rocket science is it.

Question :
Where are the plugs and how do you get to them?

I assume they are under that great big plastic cover but I cant get it off!

Any help appreciated.

Looking at Etka it appears that the only things holding it on are the oil
filler cap and 4 small balljoints fixed to the cylinder head that the cover
clips onto. In theory it looks like you only need to remove the oil filler
cap and it should just pull off but don't blame me if you break it.
I can email you a screenshot of Etka if it helps?

Thank you. It looks as though I need a workshop manual.
If there is only one coil it cant be that. I need to inspect the plugs but
don't want to start pulling things off without a reference book.
So silly. this should be such an easy thing to do.

Probably cant get a good manual on sunday so the car is out of action((

Best regards

The light is not really a silly light its a warning informing you something
is wrong but you probably guess that whilst you was mis firing :)

Once you figure out how to get the cover off. Its either on rubber grommets
(just yank it off after disconnecting breather hose or whatever else) or has
a series of bolts securing it under rubber cover pieces.

Once you get that done I **think** on that you looking for coil packs which
is what I would imagaine has gone bad. Which once who knows. They are a
common failure. Usually you get it scanned with VAG-COM and that tells you
which pack has gone, replace, reset job done. You could play guess the coil
pack and replacing and figure our which one it is. Thats what I think may
have gone wrong. I'm no expert though.

Good luck.

On Etka the 02 Polo appears to have a single coilpack with ignition leads.

We have Lift off   or rather tug off.
I am no wiser. The plugs are still not accessible and there are small
connection blocks, tubes, and  What is a coli pack ? can you get them from
Halfrods ?

My Austin A30 was never this much trouble. Had the sump off and new shells
back in and running in two hours.
This bastard is in a league of its own.((

lol yeah they are a pain in the nuts so I have found out the hard way.

Coil packs are available from main dealers or online. I use this place
http://www.gsfcarparts.com/ you may have a store near you or you can order
online.

I am sitting here looking at a faulty "coil pack" It cost about £40 + to
replace. They are a constant problem.
VW are crap

PS the car is an 02 with 12K on the clock

My suzuki has 120K and has only had oil and filter changed a couple of times
plus front discs and of course tyres.
Buy another VW
I dont think so!

Blimey only 12k!

Not familiar with the suzuki, surely you must have had the cambelt done ?
spark plugs ? air filter ?

Had to get my lockal garage to deal with it as i lost interest.
OK yes I have changed the plugs and air filter but i can do it myself. My
2.0 Vitara Auto has a chain not a belt and it goes off road often, ( must
sober up ) it has got me home in floods and deep snow. the only thing wrong
with it is a bit of rust on the rear wheel arches.
This crap 1.4 Polo is under powered, too low to the ground. You have to rev
the bollocks off it to get it to pull up a hill. and although its 7 years
youger than my Suzuki, whenever we go anywhere, we take my car as it is more
fun and less trouble.
The problem we had seems to be so comon it is a daily event. Would i buy a
VW no no no.

Another happy vw owner :) ... sounds like its time to sell it and buy
something else ?

I like the idea of having a chain instead of a silly belt! who the heck came
up with cambelt!

Vitara V6s are meant to be pretty good at the off-road stuff, tbh.

I prefer a 4x4V8Turbo personally :-p, just a shame it shreds gearboxes.

VWs after the Mk2 Golf do seem much less reliable than the earlier stuff..

Wouldn't agree with that generalised statement. We had a Bora and a Lupo and
both were fine. Yes some small niggles but neither car ever stranded us.
However I've driven quite a few Polos as courtesy cars and they do seem to
be rubbish. Interior quality was down on our Lupo. Current Golf also feels
very cheap inside compared with our Bora

As for the OP complaining about the Polo being too low to the ground. Are
you expecting it to be like your Vitara? If so, you've definitely bought the
wrong car. Agree with it being underpowered. Although you should try the 1.2
:-O

Comparing the standards of various VWs is interesting. Especially when you
remember that the *standard* model is actually not standard at all. Often
enough they are produced differently for the different markets. I know that
some manufacturers produce cars for the Spanish market to a lower
specification than for other European markets. Generally the specification
for the German market is pretty high, customers in Germany expect it. It
would be interesting to know at what level the specs are set for the UK
market. From what you say they seem to be set pretty low. If that is the
case, then I wonder why? Lack of cash? Low customer expectations?

That's probably the case to a certain extent but I doubt VW would have
different standards of dashboard across Europe. I think the British buyer
expects high standards now too.

To me it looks like VW are just cutting a few corners to make more money
while at the same time not dropping the standards below Ford or Vauxhall. As
I said, Our Lupo's interior "felt" higher quality than the current Polo or
Golf. I've not sat in a new Passatt to compare but I suspect it won't be so
bad.

It's not just VW doing this. When we were shopping for a replacement for our
Bora we looked at the Saab 9-3. A supposedly premium car. The interior
quality was absolutely shocking. I go as far as saying it's worse than the
cheaper Vauxhall/Opel Vectra which it shares its chassis with. We bought an
A4 as it is so much nicer place to be in.

There's definitely a move to cut costs on VW cars now. I bought a Golf Mk 4
when that came out and found the visual/tactile quality fine - the problems
came with design faults in the window lifters, doorseals and a radiator fan
that fails without any indications and then destroys the air-con compressor
as that overheats! The replacement was clearly made from cheaper materials.

I'm sure the actual materials used are the same across Europe, but the
details of what's included in the standard price will certainly vary. The UK
market tends to get a fairly sparse set with all the useful bits being at
extra cost.

For what's its worth I replaced my Golf with an Octavia. The same chassis,
engine and interior fittings of course, but much better value and also a
hatchback with a truly spacious boot unlike the VW offerings.

LOL I keep 2 coil packs in my boot for such special occasions as I've had a
couple go in the past and left me high and dry. I should've really had
breakdown cover but I was too cheap! Luckily I managed to push the car to
the side and there was a gsf car parts shop not far off! At the rate with
things that go wrong on my polo and golf (curse with 2 vw's) I maybe fill
the boot with every common fault part lol

Could've turned into a bucket load of money for a simple fix.

I gather your polo is all patched up and back on the road.

Did you change it yourself or did you get a garage to sort it ?

BTW did you have to reset the ecu ? (I read you have to use vag-com to reset
it to clear the fault on the dash) but when mine went I changed the coil
pack, disconnected the battery for 15 mins and all was cleared), I was
advised on a vw forum that it is no possible as it would've logged as a
fault in the ecu and would need a computer reset so I must be wrong even
though I just explained what I did.
