It's silver paint on plastic. You'll probably find that a whole grille, complete with badge is only about 20 quid from Germand & Swedish. The badge is a seperate item, and the pattern grilles are a bit shite. I'd get some fineline tape and whack a bit of silver paint on there. Rattle can will be fine. Oh right. The VW badge in the centre of the grille is chromed and so silver paint won't look right.
