Golf Mk 3 headlight relpacement

Hi all,

I was going to replace my '94 Golf 1.8 CL (petrol) headlight lamp today,
having picked up a replacement for a shade under 8 quid yesterday. Unlike
the Mk IV its supposed to be straightforward with no need for bumper
removal.

Well, I had a bit of difficulty with the wire clip that holds the lamp
(until I tried pressing it down!) but then on removing the lamp I noticed
that the original is much bigger than the replacement. The replacement
lamp is probably about 2 inches long, with 2 spade connnectors, the
original looks a lot bigger, and is a bit over 3 inches long, much wider
and has 3 spade connectors.

It maybe that this is a new design that will fit in without any probs, but
I thought I'd ask you guys before completely destroying the electrical
system.   :)

And the Haynes book says I should disconnect the negative battery
terminal, which I did, but is it necessary?

Thanks for any advice.

                 All the best,
Angus Manwaring.       (for e-mail remove ANTISPEM)

It sounds like the replacement lamp you've bought might be an H7 lamp used
for driving lights with a single filament.
The original lamp is probably an H4 lamp with a dipped beam and a main beam
filament.
It should say on the box what type of lamp the replacement is.

I personally wouldn't bother.

The original bulb has this written on it:

                H4 12v 60/55w   E13    253

and the one they gave me has:

               H7 12v 55w N103 201 01        E1   23P

I don't know if that tells you anything useful.

You've got the wrong bulb. The one you've bought is for a driving light/spot
light and has a single filament.
You need to get an H4 bulb like the original.

Thanks - sorted now.

They claimed the bulb they gave me was right, but just a slightly later
design, like from '95 onwards. Sound unlikely to you?

Some application charts are wrong, and some cars have varying
headlights- sometimes Bosch rather than Hella or vice versa, for
example, and the bulbs then change. I had the same problem with my A3.

It's possible if the 95 onwards model has seperate lamps for the dipped beam
and main beam.

Okay - thanks for your help.
