What options for a spare key for a Passat?

We have a Passat 2.0 litre sport (petrol, 2002) but there is only one
key. What options are available for getting a second (spare) key? Apart
from throwing money at VW, who I assume will want an arm and a leg for a
key.

If one gets a blank key, can they be cut easily? Can they be programmed?
I'm aware sometimes these sort of things appear on eBay, but I've no
idea what is possible.

You can buy a key on ebay, but getting the blade cut and having it
programmed into the car will be a PITA. In fact, I'm not sure it can be
done at all.

Not sure what the current situation is, but when I looked into getting a
spare B5 key, your car had to be hooked up to the VW computer network to
get an authorisation code from Germany.

Cost of a key and programming is around £120 from a main dealer.

That is a lot cheaper than i was expecting. We have not yet contacted
VW, but I've known others be quoted £800 ('normal' car) to £1200
(Lexus), so £120 would not be too bad in comparison.

Auto locksmiths can do it as well- the one I used for our Lupo had a
5052  which they used over GPRS to connect to the VW network for the
code. It was a about £90 all in for a non-remote key. The company I used
were Panik Locks, West Midlands area. I had a key cut by another place
that had failed to program it, and they refused- they wanted to supply
and code the key so they could guarantee it.

I purchased a genuine key on ebay for AU$18.00,the local locksmith cut it
for AU$10.00 and the local VW dealer coded it for half hour labour
aboutAU$28.00.I had quotes for in excess of AU$300.00 so came out well in
front, good luck ,I found this was worth the risk of it not working.
