How do I replace the brake light on a Caddy Van

One of the brake lights has gone on my 2005 Caddy Van (the current model).

There's nothing in the manual about replacing rear bulbs, and I can't see
any way of getting to them.  Does that mean it's a trip to the dealers and a
hefty bill for a very minor repair?

Call the dealer and ask them ?

I did and they told me to remove the front bumper on my mk4 golf. I laughed
and thought they was taking the wee wee and then he said no sir I was
serious. Buuut I managed to squeeze my hand in and just about do it. A
little TCP to hand after job done. Why on earth have manufucturers made
changing lights so hard, obviously they want you to take it back to them and
make some money. All the old cars I've driven 30 second job max to change a
bulb.

BTW I have no idea how to change a caddy one, but the folks on ukmkivs.net
might have an idea.

oooo hang on heres a google reasult

Thanks for that link, James.  Looks like it's a trip to the dealer.  But
it's a bit rich, that with the dealer 25 miles away and probably not able to
look at the van for a couple of days, I run the risk of being stopped by the
police for something as basic as a blown bulb.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. But might be worth removing the arch liner to
see if there is a weird way to get at them like that ?

If no joy then local garage might be a bit easier of an option that dealers
at 25 miles away and probly a load cheaper. Or local vw specialist if theres
onwe?

Good luck.

You know, when I look at all this I then remember why I get the local
workshop to do all these things. As my grandfather used to say, "If I do the
work myself then I am taking the bread out of the mouth of the artisan".
Good point, Granddad!

Nice idea, but I cannot afford the bread VW charge to eat :) ... when my
front bulb blew on my mk4 golf they wanted 90 + vat to do it.

Although I agree with your grandad 100% usually.

Will until all the other 'common' problems start occuring with your mk4
golf - better start saving for parts.  I had a V6 4mo, cost me a bloody
fortune fixing the common probs all mk4 golfs share.

Tell me about it. Had the regulators go bother sides, leaky rear washer,
ccm module die, door lock module gone ... coil pack .. door drop ... a
few other things ... touch wood I've encountered most of the likely
common problems. But you never bloomin know with a mk4 4. But its never
broken down on me and has been the most reliable car I have owned.

Next up is the octavia vrs I think :)

Just an update in case anyone is interested.

I phoned the dealers to ask whether it was a job I could do myself.  Luckily
they put me through to a mechanic who talked me through it.  Basically you
push one part of the fitting in a certain way to remove it which reveals two
screws; undo these and push the light cluster in a certain direction and
you're there!

Which begs the question: if it's relatively easy to do, why didn't they put
it in my manual???
