I was just wondering when I should get this done. The car is a mk4 vw
golf 1.6 01 model. I had it done when I bought the car and was just
wondering what the service schedule is for reknewing it ?
Thanks for any advice

I think it's 60k on the 8V 75 horse engine. Yours could well be the 100
horse 16V.

Beware, I don't know what I'm talking about, but if you are getting it
done, and they are doing the waterpump, isn't there something about using
a non-VW part with a metal impeller, because the VW ones are plastic and
fall apart?
Not sure about this, but perhaps worth checking.
All the best,

Personally, If it hasn't been done by now, I'd do it.

Hi Chris,
I was a bit sketchy on detail. The car is a mk4 golf 1.6s 16v 2001. I
bought the car at 32k and had it done at 32k. And the cars now on
66500k so I was just wondering if I should have it done as its a bit
of a worry these cambelt things, if they snap.
Thanks all, patiently awaits reply :-)

I've heard 5 years bandied about as a lifetime for a cambelt.

Yep, 5 years or 60k miles is a good guideline.

Without meaning to hijack this thread, could I also ask for advice? I have
a 2004 2.0 Diesel Caddy van (not TDi). It is currently not being used much,
so in the last 4.5 years has done only 45,000 miles.
It is booked in for its annual service tomorrow, and I've just had a call
from my local VW garage to say that they recommend a cambelt change at
either 80k miles or 4 years, whichever comes sooner, which means I should
get it done as part of the service. I know that cambelts deteriorate with
mileage, but have no idea whether they also deteriorate significantly with
age.
Can anyone confirm that this belt replacement is advisable, or is it just a
sales pitch to get more business?

Go and have a look at the sidewalls of some 4 yr old tyres, rubber
perishes especially when subjected to various temperature changes.
I've generally heard 5 yrs as a ball park as per Doki for cambelts, it's
the figure I normally stick to as well.
