My 98 S70 has developed a low speed thumping noise from the right front.
The noise changes to a constant growl as the speed increases. No vibration
is felt in the steering wheel.
I suspect a worn CV. Is this a typical noise from a bad CV, or should I be
looking for something else?

More likely a wheel bearing.
CV joints begin by clicking on lock under power.

Tim, thanks for the tip on the likely cause of the noise. It was in
fact a bad bearing. I took the car to a local independant Volvo shop
and had the work done. I wish I had found this shop years ago as it
would have saved me a lot of money. While I was there I got a quote
to repair/replace a bad electric door lock mechanism. He quoted $235
vs the dealer quote of over $600. I won't be returning to the dealer.
