J Sweet: adjusting kickdown cable....

The kickdown saga......

A long time ago I found that the outer cable sleeve had pulled out
of the back side of the ferrule it is crimped into. I was able to push
the sleeve all the way back into the ferrule, so it *is* in its
original position Then I  secured  it with automotive "Goop". So that
is not an issue.  I found the detailed adjustment instructions on
Brickboard. It says to loosen the cable on the throttle drum as much
as possible. You then pull on the cable, then release it. The spring
in tranny then retracts it and the cam is supposed to make a sound/
click as the cam hits its stop on the tranny. You then keep tightening
until the click sound just stops when it is released.  However, I can
only hear a click as I pull the cable *out* of the red end....when
released, I hear no sound as it stops upon retracting.
I am wondering if the lack of a clickcoming from tranny when the
cable is released  means that the cable is hanging up, preventing
cable and cam from going full travel and hitting the stop?   The cable
is definitely free, and pulls in and out smoothly.
When I twiddle with the adjustment, it doesn't make sense what the car
is doing. if I move the outer sheath all the way forward, making as
much slack as possible, then the car will never shift out of second
into third.  Conversely, when I moved the sheath all the way back as
far as possible (tightening cable on drum) I had the same
result....would not shift into third.  When it is in about the middle,
then the car will shift into third, but only when you let off the gas
momentarily.
If I understand it right, moving the adjustment all the way forward
(max slack) should have shifted the shift speeds so as to enable third
and O/D as well.     Geronimo

The details are outside my area of expertise, my cars have all been manual
transmissions, hopefully someone can give you some insight here though.

I've just bought a 960 2.3 turbo automatic, it only changes into 4th at
more than 60.  Is there any way to change this so that it drops into 4th
at less than 50 as we have so many 40 and 50 limits around here I'm only
doing about 20 mpg driving around in 3rd all the time.

My friend had a 740 Turbo automatic, and while I never worked on it, I drove
it once, and it would shift into 4th at 30-40 mph with a light foot. If it's
not shifting sooner, something is wrong with it. Check the fluid level,
kickdown cable, and anything else connecting to the transmission, I have no
specific details on this but it's not working as it should. Some automatics
have a vacuum line to measure engine load, I don't recall whether the
AW-70/71 in these cars do.

I've just done a couple of hundred miles on the motorway and everything
now seems to be working as it should, I think the car had been out of
use for a few months when I bought it.

the adj on the kick down cable is a funny thing...i ended up tweeking
it a bit...driving
to see the changes...tweeking again, driving a bit, etc...it took some
time...sorta like
the boost linkage...i had to drive to notice and feel the results of
tweeking one way
or the other...other than that, just make sure the cable is in the
track, free and clear,
and operating smoothly......btw: i was tweeking a 1993 940t........

It's working fine now most of the time, I will have a look at the cable at

the weekend when I change the oil and filter. I think the 940 and 960 are

the same car and engine but with different trim and turbo levels.
