hello i have a volvo v40 19 td 1999 car runs and starts fine but it
has ganed a ticking sound on the engine what could this be ?

With a diagnosis from several thousand kilometers away with so much
information: Hydraulic Valve Adjustment. Can happen with older engines.
Should disappear after a couple of minutes. Try a synthetic engine oil.
Otherwise nothing to really worry about.

Have you changed oil & filter lately as i believe most volvos have
hydraulic tappets ( valve clearances ) & if the oil has become thick &
sludgy as it does if left unchanged for a long time , then oil
galleries get blocked & slight variations ( temp dependant ) can not
work as they should hence ticking noise. in the worst case it may be
the breaking up of the piston rings, has your car been emitting any
signs of blue smoke from exhaust. let me know how you get on . kindest

Mine does it too (200K miles V70 2.5 LPT). stops after about a minute.
never had a problem from a reliability POV
