My 1978-ish 244 has just had points, plugs and timing done, but it's
still backfiring and coughing appallingly. The mechanic said the carb
[Stromberg CD 15 2] is beyond adjustment and needs an overhaul, too rich
at idle and too lean above. Anyone got an exploded diagram? Found one
for Triumphs, different fittings. TIA

You probably only need a new diaphragm for the carburettor. These fail at
(longish) regular intervals.

Cheers, Peter.

That's sheer extortion! Even over here, a replacement diaphragm for a
pierburg 175cdus (not too dissimilar to yours) is only about 15 -20 UK
pounds, are you sure that they were quoting for the right part?

Ken
