Sometimes mine will fail to lock with the remote.  I try all sorts,
walking round the car, pretenting to walk away then rush back, run away
and sneak back and have another go.  Nothing works so I'll give up and
use the key.

You can then guarantee that when i come back, it will happily unlock and
then lock again with the remote.

I've read here that Volvo remotes don't age well, it's something that I
can live with it, it's not all the time that ours fails but I'd love to
know why it does sometimes.

There are different kinds of remote-controls. The one with the lock
und the unlock key of same size doesn't work very well in different
situations.
Sometime it helps holding a finger in front of the control or touching
the control at your head.
The control with the big and the small key of the newer guard alarm
systems works fine in almost all situations.
