Is the orange service light coming on in my 90 240 DL (185,000 miles) a real
issue or is this a dealer profit light that comes on automatically at a
specific mileage?

I think it comes on every 6,000 miles, something like that.  if you stand on
your head and look up under the dash, about in the middle of the back side
of the speedometer, you will see a plastic toggle switch.  it is pretty
stiff to move.  you have to push it up.  i think it returns to its normal
position by itself.  then the light don't come on again for another good
while.  (be sure you are changing oil, filter, checking brake fluid, etc.
the light is thought to encourage that sort of thing).   i added a page to
my glove compartment manual to remind me where to find that switch . . . .
after a few cycles, you can find the switch by feel and you don't have to
stand on your head. bye bill
