740 Dash/Instrument Light Problem

Hello All,

Volvo 740 1989 "G" reg.

I've got a problem with my Instrument illumination lights, sometimes they
work but more often than not, they don't. Problem has been getting worse
over a period of time.

All the other functions within the pack still work fine.

Fuse is ok, if it had been that it would have been consistently off.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Richard

Try playing with the dimmer knob.  Failing that, you can just connect
the 2 coloured wires coming out the back of it together to remove the
dimmer function and have the instrument lights on full bright all the
time.

Have you checked the ground wire for the circuit?

Dimmer switchs, which are effectively a rheostats, go on the blink with age
on 740's, intermittantly at first then either lock up at a set brightness
level or just stop working altogether.  There are occasionally posts on the
topic.  Mike F's solution is absolutely sensible, wire so on bright all the
time.  Switch from a breakers is pot luck especially given age and cost of
replacement from Volvo??  worth it?
