The tachometer still works, but the speedo (and odometer) have died.  About a
year ago, there was an intermittant problem.  Now it is dead.

Please, could anyone suggest the procedure for isolating and repairing the
problem?  The local independent shop quoted  ~$175 if it is a mechanical
sender; ~$250 if electrical.  Thanks.

It's electrical, and usually when this problem occurs it's fixed by
resoldering cracked joints on the circuit board in the speedometer.

Also - if the car has ABS, is the ABS light on?  If so, look at the
sensor in the differential cover and the associated wiring.

Oh, I missed that the odometer also has died, I would start by checking the
wiring to the sensor under the car before even looking at the instrument
cluster, it's the more likely problem.

Thanks, all, for the replies.  No ABS.  I will crwal beneath the car to check
for any wiring - (Coming out of the [top? side?] of the transmission?).  We
tool the car to winter storage this weekend, so I won't see it again until
later this Autumn.  Thanks, again.

You can still have the same problem without ABS, the ABS light just
helps in diagnosis.  Start at the differential cover, follow the wires
up into the trunk.
