Volvo V70 Petrol Turbo

Hi, my husband is having a problem with his Volvo.

The dealer has checked it twice and each time charged for cleaning etc but
failed to solve the problem.

The car has now been with a local garage for a few weeks and going through
trial and error to eliminate possibilities. The lad doing the job suspects
perhaps an electrical fault now.

The problem was that the warning light came on to tell us there was
something wrong. Soon after that the engine started to splutter
occasionally. The lad who's looking at it has stopped that problem by
replacing two "lamma?" sensors, but now the engine is racing. He is trying
his best we think but getting nowhere. Anyone out there with ideas could
save my marriage !!!

It would help to know the exact model and year as the engine management
systems differ.
If you say where you are located someone may be able to recommend someone
local to you who is familiar with these cars and able to do the appropriate
diagnostic testing & repair.

It is a Volvo V 70,  2.5 Turbo Estate first registered October 1997

We are in Glasgow area and have already tried Murray Volvo in Paisley.
Either their equipment is inadequate or their staff didn't use it properly
because their two opportunities to solve the problem failed.

The lad who is looking at it now has checked the air flow meter and also the
ECU and both proved to be OK.

Hi Helen,

Try VolvoMax, they're in Springburn just off the M8.  I've heard nothing but
good things about them and on several occasions when I've taken my '89 240
to them they've been fantastic.
Dougie Maxwell is the guy in charge, their number is: 0141 774 7770.
They're quite busy so you might have to hold on and ring for ever!

The car will be fitted with a Motronic 4.4 engine management ECU which
requires a fault code reader to determine why the light came on.
The good news is the ECU is compliant with the US 'standard' OBDII system so
most garages should be able to read the fault codes from it.
I would guess from the symptoms the problem may be a dirty throttle body and
idle air valve.
However without knowledge of the fault codes logged in the ECU it would be
only a guess.

Replacing expensive sensors at random is not the way to solve the problem.

I think a garage local to you has been recommended, I would check they have
the equipment to read fault codes from the engine ECU (tell them the year
and model) and then try them.

Thanks again OBD. I'll pass that info on too. My husband has already phoned
the recommended garage but still hasn't arranged for it to go in. He will
collect the car today from the other lad who's looking at it.
