Problems with 5-speed automatic transmission

Hi!

I've had some problems with my Volvo's 5-speed automatic transmission
(manufactured by Aisin-Warner). Problems have occured only occasionally in
the past, but now they are present all the time. For some reason problems
occur only in the wintertime (you know, snow, ice and temperatures below
zero in celsius).

The problem is that, when sh?fting from second gear to third gear,
autotransmission doesn't shift gear immediately as normally. Instead, there
is a quite long delay (1-2 second) before it couples the third geard.
Because of the delay time engine rews up and coupling of the third gear is
very unpleasant (shock because engine revs too high).

This problem occurs only when accelerating is very moderate. When
accelerating aggressively or normally everything works just fine.
Transmission works normally with all other gears and in all other
conditions.

So, what might be wrong:
a) Software problem?
b) Some sensor problem?
c) Mechanical problem?

Which model of Volvo are you speaking of? Is it S60 or newer?

Cheers, Peter.

Hi!

Sorry, my information was limited. Car model is S80 with engine 2.4L year
2000. Should be the same combination that is used with S60's also.

I have exactly the same problem with a 2001 V70 T5.  The shift into third,
especially around residential street speeds can quite something.  About
2000 miles ago, and just over the warranty mileage of 50,000, it started
really being noticeable.  The "transmission service" warning message came
on, just after a regular service.  I was told that the code generated by
the transmission indicates an internal failure of some kind, but they
updated the software and said let's see how it goes.  It goes the same.
I'm near the end of the lease, but had initially planned to keep the car.
Now I'm not so sure...

Fortunately, in my case, new software for transmission and engine control
did the work. Now it works fine.

By the way, does anyone know if any other software updates would have been
useful besides TCM ja ECM???
Once again, the car was S80 year 2000 2.4L
