My 1988 740 shows the firing as above 1 3 4 2.
What is 1 on the distributor cap and what is 1 on the plug, first next to
the rad or at the back of the engine by the distributor

Problem solved, wrong firing order should be 4 3 1 2

No it should be 1-3-4-2, however on a 740 the posts on the distributor are
not lined up in order but rather stick straight up as it goes around.
