With the a/c set on AUTO and OFF, the system won't turn off. How do I turn
the A/C off? It just keeps switching on and off.

Thanks,

Is the red light around the "A/C OFF" button illuminated? Is the vent dial
set to Aut or is it set to defrost (I believe this mode kicks on the
A/C).... Is the red light flashing on the A/C button? (indicates system
trouble)...

The A/C system is problematic on 850's.

The compressor is used for two things, air conditioning and
dehumifidication of the defroster air.  So just shutting off the A/C
doesn't shut off the compressor.

Well, just today the light above the A/C OFF switch is not illuminated
althought I have it switched off and the system is blowing cold air.

Could this be a bad Relay? If so, where is it located?

Oh wow, I should mention that this occured before when I switched to a
different brand of gasoline. What are the chances that...?

The blue light above the A/C switch on my '95 850 failed years ago.  It
cost too much to fix so I just remember that it works like the yellow
light on the switch next to it.  So I push the end (left or right) that
turns on the yellow light on the other switch to turn it on and push the
other end to turn it off.

I don't have the automatic climate control which I think you do have.
On my '01 with the automatic climate control, the auto switch overrides
the A/C switch.

I would guess the light wouldn't be too hard to replace yourself with an
LED.

You have to take the entire dash apart, remove the entire climate
control panel and replace the entire climate control panel.  The light
is not removable or replaceable.  It is part of the climate control
panel.  At least that is what my Volvo dealer told me.

Stopped by my Volvo repair shop today and was told the trouble might be the
ECC unit.  The unit carries the A/C unit control knobs and its above the
radio.

They said for $300.00 they would pop it out ( yes it just pops right out)
and exchange it with one from another car the same year as a test.

If it works, is $300.00 fair for this part?

Hard to say, do they turn up on ebay? You could call a dealer and price out
the part, I suspect you'll hit the roof when they tell you though.

That is the same unit that holds the A/C indicator light and $300 is
what it would cost to replace that light since it involves a whole new
ECC unit.

I think my dealer charges about $300 for the unit and adds labor.

Thanks guys! Now, let me ask, does anyone know of a Volvo used parts center
in the Monterey/San Jose area?
