The muffler/exhaust system on my '86 volvo 240 appears to have com
loose from its normal position - the tailpipe sticks too far out fro
the back of the car, and if i tap it, it bounces up and down.  i stuc
my head beneath the back of the car to see what was up - i noticed tha
there was a metal pin sticking out from underneath the car that i assum
that the rubber contraption connected to the exhaust system with
couple of holes in it is supposed to sit.  i gently tried to stick th
pin into the rubber contraption, but the exhaust system didnt seem t
want to bend all the way up to the pin.  i was afraid of pushing it to
hard - so i wanted to check to make sure that i was on the right trac
before i tried to bend the exhaust system up to the pin.  an
help/guidance is much appreciated

Yeah you're on the right track, the pipe or muffler inlet probably bent
slightly from it hanging like that. I usually lie on the ground and use my
leg to wedge the muffler up and then hook the rubber mount on, I've had that
same thing happen a couple times though usually it's the rubber that's
broken.

What ususally happens is one of the joints at the front muffler or
catalytic convertor is a little loose.  These can rotate when the rear
muffler hangs down like that.
