on my 1991 125.000 miler volvo 960 3.0 24v i notice that when i am
starting out for the first journey of the day the rev counter has a
tendency to stay on the zero position even though it moves when the
throttle is applied, this usually rectifies itself and it does not
seem to have any effect on ticking over or the general performance of
the car, i also sometimes find the temperature guage is reluctant to
move and then it suddenly jumps to optimum driving position, i am
wondering if this is a relay fault or should i not be quibbling as
these are the only faults on the car.
could anyone tell me what the lock up means and when doing 25mph the
two suttle changes i feel is this the car going into third and fourth
gears.

Most probably you have a fault with the earthing (grounding) connector(s)
for the instrument panel or the or dirty printed circuit connections for the
instruments. The rev counter may be due to a dodgy connection at the sensor.
Lock-up occurs when the car is doing (usually) in excess of 55-60mph
(94-100kmh). It locks the torque converter to the engine input shaft so that
there is no converter slippage. It acts like another gear position. The
gearbox should be an AW30-43 (first year of production of the car).
All the best, Peter.
