Greetings. My 1989 760 turbo recently started squealing. A look under the
hood revealed that the A/C compressor clutch is sometimes "grabbing" on the
compressor body, and throwing off sparks.
Would that mean the clutch is failing, or the compressor itself? The A/C
(converted to R134a) seems to be functioning as well as one could expect for
a conversion.
Thanks,

The clutch is failing - in particular, the clutch bearing. If it is allowed
to eat into the compressor body the compressor won't like it, though - and
normally it doesn't help to leave the A/C off. Fix it soon and it will be
much cheaper.
