Chirping sounds from '93 965

When I drive my wife's 93 960 wagon (175K miles) I hear a sound similar to a
cricket that chirps for a second or two then stops, then again, and so on.
At first I decided a cricket had found a warm home. But the sound is too
random in length and interval to be an insect and I have heard this on the
last few trips. It is not very loud and I cannot really tell where it
originates. It is not a squeal, a buzz or a rattle. And it does not sound
quite like a bad bearing does. After 20+ years and a few hundred thousand
miles of driving in several cars, this is a sound I have not heard before.
Has anyone experienced something similar? My biggest concern is that it
might originate in the transmission.

MAKE SURE that it is not coming from under the hood! It sould be a
component of the serpentine belt which would be no big deal, but it
MIGHT be the timing belt or a related component (like a water pump),
failkure of any of those compinents could mean the destruction of the
motor.

WHat isthe frequency of the sound when it hapens (how many squeaks per
second)?

I'll bet anything that it's your driver's seat. My 760 was doing this
too and tracking down the cause was driving me crazy! It maybe doesn't
do it for your wife because she has the seat in a different position.
Mine's all the way back and a seatbelt buckle component gets pinched
against the plastic centre-console and, when the seat shifts due to
cornering/breaking/accelleration it gives a little chirp.

The chirp is loud because it's right next to you. It happens at
seemingly random intervals because it is not relate to the mechanics
of the car but to the forces of momentum exerted on you while you
drive. Crank the seat as far forwards as you can stand and adjust the
angle and drive around for a few KMs and see if it goes away.

Annoying yes. Dangerous no.

We get similar sounds when the back seat is folded down and the back
of the driver's seat rubs against it. Could also be a seat belt buckle
against the leather or maybe aganst the center console. It would seem
that these would be more easily dignosed then a sound from under the
car or the hood.

I'd look at the tailgate: try adjusting the lock and/or the stops in de
sides
