I have an '02 S60 AWD with 31K miles. About 8 months ago it started
to make a moaning sound (almost like what you hear in recordings of
whale calls) whenever I made a hard left turn over 15mph. I mentioned
it to my mechanic who said that it was the tire rubbing in against the
wheelwell ..."a common problem in the S60" he said. (I have the
16in wheels)

Well the noise continued, and about 3 weeks ago started to get much
louder and is now followed by a nasty brief grinding noise once the car
straightens out from its left turn. The mechanic still insists it's
the tire hitting the wheelwell. Sounds like a bad CV joint or something
more sinister to me.
.....anyone have any insights?

Many, many thanks!

If it is the tyre, that's quite a worry itself. Although mine is a different
model & age, it makes similar noises... and others - it's the brake pads on
this one, the bearing play lets the disk wander slightly when parking.
Apparently brake noise is not uncommon with asbestos replacement materials,
but they still work well so I'm not bothering about it.
