Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a reputable Volvo mechanic in Barrie? Preferably
one who might be open on a Saturday to do a once-over on a car I'm
looking at up there.

Thanks!

I trust you do not mean Barry in South Wales, Blurp old pal. LOL.

All the best, Peter.

LOL. Nope, Barrie Ontario. About an hour north of Toronto (once you
spend an hour getting out of the city).

Getting down to shorter strokes on accquiring a wagon (i.e. actually
talking to sellers and establishing a budget) and there's an 850 Turbo
Wagon for around $4000 I'd like to get checked out. I also got word
that a 1991 940 Turbo wagon I was interested in (partly due to
stumbling on this: http://www.epinions.com/content_21682228868) but
the owner replied today to say:

"I replaced the turbo in October 2003 for $1100 (I've got all my
maintenance records).  It does blow smoke if you really step it and
use the turbo, but this was my wife's car so that didn't happen too
often.  On a trip from here to Ottawa I would burn about a half liter
of oil and could count on one liter of oil needed between oil
changes."

My 240 was/is a Turbo and it has quite an apetite for oil too but it's
an '83 with an oil-cooled turbo, this '91 should be water cooled so
blowing smoke and consuming oil is a red flag to me.

I asked the question here before and the 940 series came out on top in
terms of reliability, longevity, cost of ownership, and ease of
repair. I just like the 850 series but it may be beyond our means to
get a decent one.

In a perfect world I'd be able to buy from someone here so I'd know it
was maintained.

About an hour going the other way (heading for TO...), there's Suters
in Aurora. Resonable prices and will make use of after-market parts if
available.

I use Suter's a lot...  They are quite good.  I'm happy with the service,
and have taken my 760 and my sister's 850 there several times.

You should make an appointment there, which is hard when my car breaks down
unexpectedly.. I can't be without it for long.  I live in west Toronto, and
reverse commute to Aurora every day!

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I don't think the car's owner
will appreciate me driving it all the way to Aurora for a once-over.
was hoping for Barrie so we could just nip in at an appointed time and
get the car checked. As it stands I think driving to Barrie is too
much effort anyway for a car with 315K km on it.

Thanks again,
Blurp
