OBD-II Scan tool in UK?

I'm interested in the possibility of acquiring the necessary hardware and
software to connect the OBD-II connector on my 1999 (2000MY) V70 2.5D(iesel)
to a laptop computer.

Does anyone know whether anything suitable is available in UK?

I know that there are a couple of outfits in USA selling kit. Has anyone in
UK bought any kit from USA? If so:
* from which supplier
* does it work ok?
* how good is the software and documentation (specifically for interpreting
and displaying Volvo codes in a meaningful fashion)?

As a for instance, my Engine Check lamp is currently on. Would the kit
enable me to analyse the error codes - with an English explanation of what
they mean - and, if appropriate, reset them so that the light goes off?

TIA.

Check with Volvo UK or your dealer who will be able to confirm that there is
one available for your car.

All the best, Peter.

Thanks for the suggestion - but I can't somehow see Volvo approving of - yet
alone facilitating - the idea of customers getting hold of these tools!

Anyone else got any ideas or information - particularly if you have
first-hand experience of owning and using an OBD-II scan tool.

Hi, I bought a reader from Scantools, (  www.scantool.net  ) using
their Swanea supplier.

It has worked perfectly for me, with their own software although there
are plenty of other programs knocking about.

I had problems with O2 sensors on my '99 S70, and it worked every
time. Also resets the MIL.

All error codes, plus a mountain of other information, are available
on the Net for free.

Cheers,
Martin

My friend bought that one, and I tried it on few cars, and it has worked
(Mazda 626, Renault Clio, Audi A6...). Unfortunately this nice and cheap
tool (100 euros) doesn't work with 1996. 850TDI :-(
But, Vol-fcr does.

Scantool probably works with older volvo gasoline models, but only works
with diesels younger than mine :-(

Yes, but it cannot reset Sevice light. Seems that Vol-fcr can reset it,
plus it seems it can access ABS, SRS,... etc information.

That is true, I have found it myself...

1. Press and hold odometer reset button.
2. Turn ignition switch to Run.
3. After service flashes, release odometer reset button.
4. Confirm by turning your Volvo off, then on again.

http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/reset.php  has always worked for me ?

Thanks. Looks interesting - and I will follow up.

Is your S70 petrol or diesel? - (because there may be a difference with
compatibility)

Good point. Mine is petrol.

They do show some models on their 'compatibility' list
http://www.scantool.net/scanned_list.shtml

which includes a diesel '99 S80.

You could check with them directly through the website?

Martin

Check this out - it looks promising:

http://www.onboarddiagnostics.co.uk/volfcr/

I didn't try it, but I would also be interested in buying it, if someone
could answer the same questions you are asking :-)

I think Vol-fcr can reset DTCs, but only after you fix the problem.

Please - if you decide to go for Vol-fcr - post your experience after
playing with it :-)

Thnx.

I used the Harrison R & D kit, I think the website is www.obdscan.com - it's
linked from my site.

Yes.

Worked on our non-Volvo... if the Volvo is OBD-II compliant it should work
just peachy.

Mine - www.dervman.com/obdii-htm - will allow me to reset ECU codes but you
have to translate the readings.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, rumour has it that Volvo diesels were
not OBDII compliant until 2003 - so that would rule out my 1999/2000 model,
even though it has an OBDII socket.

Where do you get the information for translating the codes?
