940 Immobiliser fitted?

I just help my sisters family get a 96 940 GLE Estate which seems in good
condition but is missing the remote key fob. The guy selling it was a
trader and said it just wasn't fitted with an alarm, but it could be any
hidden reason.. lost / broken / faulty etc.

What I want to know is, is it fitted? There is a little red LED on the left
hand speaker which never lights, and there is a glass break detector. It
definately does not have the dual LED and button module on the window my 95
940 SE Turbo has. Search on Google throws up model information saying it
has remote central locking / alarm / immobiliser etc.

They really need an immobiliser since this car is a replacement for their
360 that was stolen. Is it likely / economical a new key fob can be bought?

Just because the spec says it has, does not mean that it has all the
equipment fitted. The lefthand speaker device should be a sunlight sensor
for the air conditioning. There is a version having the immobiliser only
which does not need the alarm system as it is in place of the alarm. The
"Glass breaking sensor" could well be the aerial for the immobiliser. The
Remote Central Locking is tied into the immobiliser circuit and the
diagnostic code for immobiliser is read on pin 3 of the diagnostic plug. You
need a fob for the central locking's remote function. The trader must supply
the key fob for the car and make sure that it matches correctly. Otherwise
get the dealer to supply/fit and make sure that it works and get the trader
to reimburse the dealer's bill. If the trader won't agree to this, get your
money back and get a car that works fully (preferably with alarm fitted not
immobiliser).

Thanks for the info, the car was sold 'as is' ie clearly stated without
alarm so I can't complain too much about that. Volvo will sort it out for
around £80, although we will track down the previous owner hopefully.

However there are more serious problem now with oil loss then oil light
comming on after a head-degunk and oil change. I think the sale of goods
act should cover it, and they should be protected for this problem even when
selling under as is, since it wasn't sold for further repair or parts. See
seperate post.
