Power steering pump seems to be making a little noise. Is this a common
fault for this car and mileage? What is likely to need
replacing/fixing?

How much is this likely to cost to repair?

Is the fluid low? get it topped up.

The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon; the vessel
with the pestle has the brew that is true.

Seconded. It may be worth checking for leaks - I have the same car of the
same age and it recently developed a very small leak from the pinion shaft
- the bit where the steering column connects into the rack. Have a look
down the back of the engine and see if anything looks damp. The system only
hold 0.85 litres of fluid so it doesn't take a very big leak. Use ATF if it
needs topping up.

Could have been bulshitted by them , but both my motor engineer and my main
dealer told me that Volvo power steering fluid is not interchangeable with
ATF and is specific to the system. Dealer topped it up for free though.

Well, I have two sources of information: Autodata says 'Volvo ATF', Haynes
manual says 'Dexron type ATF e.g. Duckhams ATF Autotrans III)'. Based on
that, I reckon it's just plain old ATF. They're the same with the coolant -
they say you MUST use Volvo's own - when all it is is bog standard long-
life E/G anti-freeze.
