Replace door handle on 1990 740 GL

Along with smashing my driver's side taillight assembly and shearing
off the gas door, a snowplow tore off the driver's side exterior door
handle on my 1990 740 GL. Thanks guys.
I have a replacement handle and my lackluster Chilton's 72302 (p 10-7),
which claims to apply to  almost every car Volvo put out between
1990-1998. Predictably, it sucks. The diagrams which detail removal of
the inside door panel don't apply to my model.
-- I tried to pull off the plastic release handle 'nub' from the end of
the lever, at first with hand pressure and gradually more aggressively
prying with a screwdriver. The screwdriver, a cheapo, bent, so I was
unable to remove the nub. I moved on to other areas and figured I'd get
back to it.
--  The speaker grille/cover was considerably different from that shown
in the book. The book's appeared to be some sort of mesh stretched over
a frame, whereas my car's was black metal with a hard plastic frame. No
visible pry slots or screws.
-- Removed the trim panel beside the arm rest. In the book, the panel
covered two retaining screws. There were no retaining screws behind the
trim panel in my car.
-- In the book's fig 32, there are 5 retaining screws at the bottom of
the door panel. Not so on mine. The book's photos don't appear to have
a magazine slot, which leads me to believe that the demo may have been
the car's rear door.
Can anyone help me get the interior panel off so I can install the new
handle? I'm getting a little weary of having to open the rear door to
reach through to the front door's interior release handle.
TIA.

Thanks Mike. I gave it a glance. Doesn't sound exactly like my door
(there's no light on the end of the door near the latch in Step 2).
Hopefully it'll be close enough, though.
I felt three square holes at the bottom of the door's interior. They
felt like slots for plastic tabs within the door. I pushed up on the
three tabs and they moved in a tad, but the lower part of the door
still didn't seem like it wanted to budge.

You pull the clips down and out of the door to release them. Also the
speaker grills need to be removed.

All the best, Peter.

And I've never seen a 740 door panel without the little light lens on
the rear.  Maybe that has been removed or lost on yours.
