Hi there,

My wife's 94 850glt started a very loud clicking when you open the
driver side door.   About 1 month later, the passenger side door started
to make a similar sound.

It is quite loud and sounds like a spring being torqued. (does that make
sense?)

It also seems to happen at the two "stay open" points that the door has
in it's travel.

Any thoughts?  Is this somethings I could fix myself?

Thanks in advance,

Same thing happened to me on my 97 850. Had to have the mechanism
replaced. I did not attempt a DIY as the door needs to be removed.

There are lubrication points on the door.  I think one is to prevent
this.  I always get dealer service and have no problem.  Some people
have had trouble with a weld breaking which causes a similar symptom.

A common fault is for the pillar to crack around the door stay bracket
between the hinges and when the door is opened you will hear a loud
crack.

Thanks for the input everyone.. yes, I would describe it as almost a
cracking sound.  Very loud!  So it sounds like some of you are saying
not a DIY job..  should I start taking this apart or take it in to the
dealership?

Hey Mark,

Upon closer inspection that is exactly what it is.  You're good!  Do you
know if I can fix this by re-inforcing the surrounding wall or do I need
to replace worn parts?

Many thanks,

Like this:

If so, the door has to be removed and the crack welded.

Check the operation of the door latches and the alignment of the doors
with the body before you accept the car.  My driver's side (the one
that broke) required a harder pull on the latch handle from then on..
I should have had them adjust it.
