i desparately need help in solving a problem with my '91 940 GL estate 2ltr
petrol.yesterday car running beautifully untilstopped at shops,on starting
it started making a strange whizzing noise which got louder and louder,
the radio died as did the indicators and the lights.Driving on the noise
got worse and there was a burning smell coming from the engine so pulled
over & switched off. tried to start up but would'nt turn over. Left it for
20 mins and then it started and drove as if nothing had happened although
still no lights etc.Got home and switched off, but could'nt start it
again.Local garage managed to bump start it and took it in as they thought
it was the starter motor. Picked it up today and it was running perfectly,
until i stopped at the shops and on trying to start it the noise was back!
Now i'm stuck with a car that keeps dying and am £90 out of pocket and
no-one seems to know what to do! Can anyone suggest anything?

You need to probe engine components with a stethoscope to trace where this
noise is coming from.  Belts/alternator, something there... since you have
no large power supply (to drive lights, or charge battery, but could be
enough juice for fuel pump/ignition).

Maybe generator is in bad shape (bearings) or water pump, look at those if
they work ok.

When the brushes go in the alternator, you would hear a strange noise
and they may smell electrical. It would definitely cause the battery to
discharge.
