My 1998 S70 was totaled last week in a collision. Now I need a replacement car. I am looking to keep it in the 18K range. For that money I can get something like a 2002 S60 certified used with about 40K miles or a new Honda Accord or Huyndai Sonata. Any advice would be appreciated. With regard to the collision I was rear ended by a Ford F150 and pushed into a Yukon so my car was smashed in the front and back. The S70 really took most of the impact without the airbags deploying which is why I am considering another Volvo. But I'd need to get a used one to keep the price manageable. One concern I had about the S60 is the space in the back seat. It seemed cramped and I'd need it for carpooling kids once or twice a week. > My 1998 S70 was totaled last week in a collision. My sister didn't buy a S60 for the exact reason, the rear seats/doors aren't kid/child seat friendly. My next car will be a used Volvo, maybe a S60 or S40 (old model). The Honda is nice, the Hyundai although much better than an American car for reliability, is NOT even close to a Honda/Toyota product. You can compare a current Hyundai to a several generation old Toyota. The new Sonata is nice, but not as evolved as any Toyota. Any Volvo will outlast the Honda/Hyundai, yes, even the new Volvos. You could get a almost new s60, but why when the s 40 is just about as big, hint hint. You might get a used acura TL, you could get a new Acord as you say. If you gotta tow a lot of rug rats around what about a mazda 5? The chevy equinox or the saturn vue are damm nice but a bit out of the price. You could go for a forrester... If it were me I would lean strongly to a used 5 series, or a MB 320E wagon or a v70... BTW...used BMW wagons do not seem to hold value like the sedans... Also have a 2005 Huyndai Elantra for the older kids to share and commute to/from college. This car is mostly for me to drive to work and do some carpooling to school. The question for me is for around 19-20K do I get a 4 yr old higher end car (Volvo s60 or Acura TL or the like )or just get a new top of the line Sonata (LX) with all the bells and whistles. If it were me I would buy the Acura or the S60. I bought a shiny new Acura TSX, for about the price of an S40. I'm happier with it than I have been with any of the 6 Volvos that preceded it.
