V70 TDi - cambelt - a DIY job or not really ?

As above... how much / how long would it take to change the belt on the V70
Tdi or for a Volvo dealer / specialist to do it, and approx cost of parts
needed  if it is something I could do with my tools ( I don't have any
special Volvo tools if any needed for this job) ?

If you're not somehow familiar with this job, I definitely wouldn't recommend to
do it yourself. Parts may be just a few dollars (don't forget the crankshaft
oil seal on that side of the engine while your working on it) but making sure
the camshafts and crankshaft are in the right position is rather vital.

Hi Marc,

Thanks for the reply - I am familiar with building engines and recently had
the 4 cams off my bike to re-shim it, so have all the usual "normal"
workshop tools and experience - it's just I have not worked on this engine
before and wondered if there were any special tools needed that would be
showstopping if I didn't have them..

Yes, you require a dial gauge on the injection pump initially, then a scan
tool to re-align the pump timing electronically.

Joe Landy will be along in a moment to explain fully how it is done, he's
done about as many miles in a TDi as anyone on the planet..

Hi Tim,

I think that answers my question - Thanks !

I am new to this car / engine and know very little about it - Do you know if
there are any points I should specifically check for, and whether it has
"plenty in reserve"
as I propose to tow with it and wondered if there if it would stand being
chipped for a
bit more power if I felt it desirable ?

Suggest that you buy the volvo VADIS software. You can find it cheap on the
internet/ebay. In the Vadis software the procedure is described including
what
you need to take care about.

It should be ok to chip tune this car, but of course it will stress the aut.

If it is an auto, then change the auto box fluid soon as. There is no
recommended change interval on these, at all (lunacy) and plenty have failed
(usually anytime after 100k) because of it. If you are towing a fair bit
change the fluid and filter at least every 20k.

This engine chips well and performs very strongly. Smoke can be a problem
with higher milers on tired injectors and / or over zealous EGR (blank it
off)

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the reply - interested in your comments about injectors and EGR
being blanked off - I  have heard of this before and never followed it up.
Can you explain what is involved and the pros and cons or where I might find
the info.

Any recommended chips for smooth driving, power and economy,  and should I
need injectors,  can they be reconditioned / exchange or go for new ?

Depending on the car, you fashion a tin plate and sandwich it under the EGR
valve effectively blanking off the feed pipe. The EGR valve still opens but
no gas can pass. Improves MPG, cuts smoke, slight increase in power, but
much more eager at part throttle.

Speak to ECP , GSF or your local LSUK outlet for recon / new injectors.

Any side effects on eco-test, after blanking the EGR off?
Does it make the check engine light turn on?
