First time with "TireRack.com" -- good first impression

My 1987 740 I bought in March seems to have tires purchased during the
Civil War. They are old Michelins that are dry-rotted and I've been
driving around with a sphincter factor of 7 for the last week or so
that the car's been running well after the engine rebuild.

Anywho, I ordered some tires on Tire Rack and after a lot of research,
decided on the Yokohama Avid TRZ for $53/each (185/65-14).

Well, I placed the order online, then got a phone call from them about
an hour later. It was a representative who didn't think the size I
selected would be best for my interests. My standard size was 185/70-14
and I just thought by switching to a 185/65 would give me a lesser
sidewall (more sporty looking). He said this would decrease the load
factor and depending on how I drive, could be something worrisome.

What impressed me was he asked me to consider another tire I liked,
which was only a $35 Kumho. A cheaper tire!  I told him I wanted
something a little more sporty, so he suggested the number 2 tire, the
BF Goodrich Traction T/A T for $52 in my size, and I got that one.

It kind of gave me that "warm and fuzzy" feeling to get personal
service from an online discount company who didn't try and push a
higher priced product and actually seemed to know what they were
talking about. Now, I am sure we could debate the whole 185/70 versus
185/65 thing, but I'm satisfied with the outcome.

Nice first impression.

I had good luck buying some BFGs for my wife's 740 at Wal Mart.

Researched online, decided what to buy, and got em.

Good price, free follow up rotation.

I have always had good results from tire rack too.
How do you like the tires?

The tires are being delivered at this time, I hope to get them today.

Don't know about Yokohama tires, but whatever you get from Tire Rack, or
whenever you deal with them, I've found them to be great in all respects.

I once found something I liked online through tirerack, and per their
suggestion found a local vendor ostensibly allied with them to do the
mounting and balancing.

When I called the vendor, he asked what tire rack was going to charge
me for the tires and the shipping charges.

When I told him, he said "we'll match it:" which he did.

Why wait for tires to be shipped when you can to to a local dealer and
get them on the same day?

So be careful, tirerack, your alleged allies will stab you in the back
at every opportunity.

I'm in an itty-bitty town - 6,000 people. We have a couple of local
tire shops that stock some tires, but not many of the big name brands.

I ordered the tires yesterday around 11am, they showed up at my door
today at 4pm via UPS.

It worked out well for me, the tires cost $208 for 4, the shipping was
$32 and the cost to mount and balance all 4 is $35.  So I end up paying
$275 total - it took 2 days for everything, and it comes out to about
$68 a tire when you add it all up.

I guess in my case that's not too bad.
