V70 stalls intermittantly

Hello -
The past couple of days, our V70 (turbo, AWD) has stalled a couple of
times when idling at intersections.  The car can be restarted, but the
stalling appears to be increasing in frequency as the week has
progressed.

There's nothing weather-wise (it hasn't been unusually hot or wet) that
seems to affect the issue.

Does it sound like it could need plugs/wires?

TIA

There is a "service campaign" for the electronic throttle system (ETS)
and electronic throttle module (ETM) where they actually put in a new
program that ignores errors by the ETM.  If they need to replace the
ETM, it covers that.   It is not techically a recall, but "VSC 155
service campaign".

Here is what the campaign covers:

"Electronic Throttle Module (ETM) failure may illuminate Electronic
Throttle System (ETS) light or MIL. Symptoms may include, uneven engine
idle, and/or "limp home mode" that could restrict vehicle speed to 10-30
miles per hour. Faults of the ETM are stored as DTCs in the ECM. If OBD
II detects a fault that might increase emissions, the MIL is
illuminated. Remedy: A software upgrade will be performed at the next
service interval, and ETM warranty extended to 10 years or 200,000
miles, whichever comes first."

It basically covers S70, V70, V70 XC, C70, S80, and S60 from 1999 to
2002.

Thanks for the information.  Unfortunately, the vehicle is a 1998 :-(

Steve,
We haven't experienced either the uneven idle and/or "limp home mode."

Today was the first time that I was in the car when the problem
occured.  I dropped my wife/kids off at the front door of where we were
going and while they were getting out of the car, the engine stalled.
It took three or four turns of the key to get it to restart.  The
second time was when I was parking.  I pulled forward to back into the
spot and it stalled when I went to put the car in reverse.  This time,
it was a good 7-8 attempts to start it.  Leaving to come home, the
engine started right away and we did not stall at all.

I'm going to call the local garage tomorrow, but if you have any other
thoughts aside from the ETM, I'd appreciate the insight.

TIA

Yours (like mine) is the last year with the throttle cable, so all the
ETM stuff doesn't apply to you.  I have 2 '98s, both T5s.  The S70 was
random stalling (but always restarted right away).  So I started
swapping possible random stall parts between the cars.  I started with
the fuel pump relay, then the crank position sensor, then the coil, and
finally the air mass meter, which finally moved the problem to the other
car.  (Never was I so happy to have my car stall on me in traffic!)

I have V70 T5 (2000- model 2001) (YV1SW53K212058831) and have problem with
ETM.
I receive message 'Performance reduceed' and couldn't drive above 40 Km/h.
Is this the same problem? Could this be included in service campaign?

My car has 196.000 Km.

Yes, at least in the USA.  I am not sure how they are handling it in
other countries.
