On my 88 Camry, two screws could be removed on the ignition key
switch and then you could clean the contacts. This fixed the no-start
/no-rotate problem it had.  The 92 740 turbo wagon does the same thing
intmt. Am pretty sure it is either the starter lock-out switch on
tranny or the ignition switch itself. Know how to bypass the tranny
switch...if it proves to be the ign switch that is the problem, can I
open up the ign switch as on the Camry, or is there nothing to do but
replace ign switch?

IIRC the front side of the Volvo switch is closed, rather than the open
style favored by Honda and Toyota. OTOH, the switch is much more reasonably
priced than Honda (and I presume Toyota.) $62 US at FCP Groton
(http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo700900steering.htm), part number 9447805,
will have you working reliably for the rest of the car's life.

I replaced mine, but I plan on opening the old one to see what the guts
look like.

I'd be interested. My son's Acura was acting up (over $200 US for an
aftermarket switch!?!?) and all it took was cleaning and regreasing - it
didn't look like there was any significant erosion or pitting. But then he
overtorqued the mounting screws and cracked the housing in two....
