This is just flat out amazing, in my opinion. Never have I seen such a
performance machine in a Volvo!

Impressive car, but the guy's a real a.shole. If I saw him on
the highway, I'd call the cops.

I'd much prefer being labeled a troll than a ng pussy.

Upon further reflection, I stepped out of line in calling you a pussy.

Clearly you are a law abiding member of society, albeit most certainly
a "square."

You know, the kind of poindexter that thinks of wheezing, 107 hp NA
Volvos as "boxy, but safe."

The concept of creating and then thrashing a turbobrick eludes you.

Pity.

The concept eludes me, too, but I doubt it is a pity. If I'm not mistaken
that is a gasoline tanker he is deliberately losing control around. I have
no problem with people having expensive toys, but operating them in a way
that others or their property are endangered... that I do have a problem
with. Enough people are injured or killed by people trying to drive
sensibly, why should we add more tragedy because somebody wants to show off?

At the least, we should be concerned for the driver's family and friends. It
is a wretched person indeed who is loved by nobody.

Mike (who has seen enough horror)

Wrong-o, Bucko. I grew up pit crewing for the fastest stock
Volvo drag car in the country (200hp from a B-18), and I like
cars that are fast, especially when efficient. For 9 years I rode
a Suzuki Madura 1200 that would hit 140mph and still get 40mpg.
What pissed me off about this guy is that he thinks the highways
are his own personal playpen. Lots of fun until he kills a family
in a subcompact or a bicyclist or motorcyclist - and walks away
from it. If he kept it on the track I'd bee rooting for him.

In short, don't quit your day job to analyze people.
Ron - 17 Aug 2006 12:50 GMT
Yeah, Imagine what a person who could drive could do with that car!

This video appears to stir up some controversy, my apologies for that.
When I watched this video it appeared to be in Europe, so my knowledge
of their street laws and practices were set aside.

I focused mainly on the car and just could not believe how much raw
power and responsive handling came from a 740 turbo.

" could not believe how much raw

thats a big feature of the early 90's "red brick" blocks....
some folks over boost them into the 300-400 hp range..
almost double from the factory settings...they are a
strong motor that will take a lott of stress...in my case, the
tranny (1993 940t) ended up being the waek point, after
doing the mods to "pwer up"...

anyway...the volvo turbo power is strong and smooooth .......

It *is* an impressive car. It should be noted, though, that
he runs it with inadequate rear tires and not the best chassis
balance, apparently so he can generate lots of smoke and
powersliding. Just look at him trying to keep it straight in
a straght-line drag - and failing, even with no torque steer to
speak of. It takes skill to control a car behaving like that,
but not brains.

IMO it looks like a lot of fun, I don't think I'd trust myself to drive
such a powerful car but I do tend to like them that are a bit squirly
and tail happy. Drag racing always struck me as rather dull and
pointless, rally racing is far more dynamic and interesting, to each his
own though. At any rate I was very impressed with the amount of raw
power achieved there from what looked to be relatively low tech
modifications and the car appeared to be fairly streetable still.

I prefer SCCA type racing, with close to stock cars. I just
mentioned my background in drag racing (my father's thing)
because somebody thought I was a Little Old Lady, apparently.
Drag racing in the stock classes was interesting, especially
with the Volvo Amazon going up against American muscle cars that
had to 'spot' it half the length of the track. My dad used to get
his opponents into little burnout matches in the staging line,
causing their V-8 engines to get too hot, while the B-18 just got
happier...

The second car, which saw only one season of racing, was a
modified, lightened 544, with a B-18 putting out 250HP, using
dual Webbers. It ran in the mid 14's.

Yup. The other guy would have to get the crew in to spray the
V-8 with water to cool it down for the run, and the little B-18
would just purr happily. That car made a great WAAAAHH! sound as
it came off the line... The Amazon drag car was about as fast in
the quarter mile as a stock 350 Corvette from the same era -
early '70's.

Great find, thanks for posting it.

The wierd thing is, the car looks EXACTLY like my wife's 740 (except
the tires/wheels differ).

One Sweet Ride.

Hi !

Nice video!

OK, guys: There is a real "con" and "pro" for that - I agree. Some guys do
need some special toys ;-)

But: Do you noticed the drivers skills (at the round!)?. Whoever had a
drivers training (like me), knows that it is really(!) hard to perform that
fine and correct curve-sliding!

Just my 2c!

Regards, Torsten

Correct.

There was little or no danger of him slamming into the parked tanker,
due to the angle of approach.

yea, he is a skilled drifter...imho....

All I'm saying is he could go a hell of a lot faster on less wasted
rubber and gas!
