engine swap Kevin (10/18/2004 12:26:14 AM)
Im considering the purchacse of an 85 740diesel. How much should I set
aside, to swap in a gas engine? What would be the best choice for a
swap?

Why? Why not just find a 740 with a gas engine and buy that. The cost
to do an engine swap will be far more than the car is worth. There may
be emmission issues that will make the car unable to be registared.

My wife drives a 1985 740 that we bought which was converted to a V6
Buick engine. Since the engine used was a Service Replacement Block
engine with no VIN we only need what was on the car in the first place,
i.e. no AIR, EGR or cat. A loophole to be sure. It has GM TBI and is
driveable and economical, if not like the diesel. We are extremely
happy with the car.

Depends on how much you can get the engine for. Plenty of people swap in
Ford 351's and Chevy 350 smallblock V8's, it won't save you any money
over buying a gasoline 740, that's for sure, the swap alone will
probably cost more than a good running car, but if you want a high
performance V8 powered Volvo a 740 Diesel is a good starting point as it
already has heavy duty suspension and the Diesel engine is almost always
dead or very tired.
