suddenly stopped working, although the speedo is still ok, so I'm guessing
the little geared wheel has broken or jammed someway... happened before,
about 4 years ago, and I was able to find a replacement speedometer head in
the local junkyard. At that time, I noticed there were several different
configurations, but got lucky. I was wondering if I don't see exactly the
same type, can I likely use the gear out of a slightly different model? That
is, did they all use pretty much the same guts, just wrapped in a different
cosmetic package???...

You should need a gear from a wagon.  The internals are different.

Wagons have a 9800 below the odometer.

Thanks for the link! I read thru it, and will take a look at my speedometer
tomorrow. It's been a couple years since I've had to pull the instruments
out, so this was a good review....

'86-'93 240s all used electric speedometers, earlier ones were cable.
Cosmetics on any 240 speedo are pretty much identical, and in the case
of the electric ones the internals should be the same as well since you
don't have to worry about drive ratios like in the cable type.

I believe somebody (IPD?) sells a repair kit for them.
