Sounds like parcel shelf or something similar making a hollow rattling noise over bumps - even slight ones. Took it to the main dealer - technician and his boss took for test drive and up on ramp and said it is something that can happen inside the silencer. Car only 3 years old and silencer is excellent condition and they said choice is to live with it or have a new silencer for £500. I feel very disappointed as the noise gets on your nerves. Is it really what they say it is and can't anything be done about it. I've not had that problem on Volvo's that have gone for 8 years and 200,000 miles. You may have done this already so pardon me if that is so. Check the trunk throughly for something loose inside the wheelwell including the spare tire itself. Unfortunately if this is the problem Volvo will probable not be helpful about fixing it at their cost. Obviously a muffler which fails in 3 years is poorly made, but often Volvo's attitude seems to be Tough Luck. Hmmm, wonder why I have been buying Honda/Acura products lately ?
