I have the opportunity to trade my '91 740 wagon in on a 1995 960 sedan with
about 115,000 on it. Has new tires, rear rotors and brakes, recent motor
mounts and looks pretty good other than a few dings to the front and rear
bumper...which don't bother me. Volvo mechanic said that about 140K I would
need a new timing belt that would run about 4-500 bucks.
Does anyone have input about the 960. I've been driving a 240 or 740 for
about 9 years and have been very satisfied.
Thanks for comments.

Should be a good car.  The inline-6 engine is not nearly as bullet-proof
as the 4-banger in the 740, but with care should run a long while.  It is
an interference design, so that timing belt change is a must.

This was the last RWD Volvo made (960/S90/V90).

All in all a good car, and probably worth around USD $5000 - $7000.

The I6 indeed isnt quite so bullet proof, however I have a customer with a
97 960 3.0 that was LPG'd at 180k miles, and its now at 280k and still
running sweet. Does burn abit of oil though...

Surprisingly, the auto box is fine still too!

But much, much more bullet-proof than the V6 in 260/760 :-)

The 960 is a nice riding and driving car with one of the smoothest
engines I've experienced.  Almost turbine like when in good tune and
has plenty of power.  You might also look at the maintenance records.
The trans and power steering should have been flushed at least once and
the brakes and coolant should have been done several times and regular
oil changes should have been done.

Also compare the offering price to Edmunds.com.
