V70 diesel issues

I currently have a March 1997 2.5 Direct Injection diesel manual V70 which
has about 161,000 miles on the clock.

Pretty much everything on it is working fine and I have done the timing belt
and injector pump drive belts/injector timing in the last 5000 miles, and
performance seems lively.

One issue I am getting is that it sounds like it is "misfiring" or has a
lazy cylinder at idle/low revs (less than 2000rpm). The dealer says it
sounds normal and has done a cranking current test on it and says cylinder
compressions are normal and balanced, which leaves me wondering what else it
could be. (poor injector pattern on one ?) It doesn't seem to be affecting
anything but just sounds terrible - I have run engine oil flush and also
injector cleaner through, thinking it might be a partially sticking
injector, but no change. Fuel consumption seems good ( around 45 mpg (UK) on
a run). Any suggestions from anyone what else I could consider looking for ?

Another issue is that what appears several (but not all) dash board panel
lights seem to be blown, mainly on the left side and also on the left side
of the radio/CD unit, making it very difficult at night to see the knobs -
not sure if these apparent problems are linked or I just need to replace
blown bulbs / LEDS, or a wire / connector has come adrift.  How do I get
into the dash to replace or is it a major dash removal job to replace, and
also the radio ?

Thanks

Nick

If its not had refurbed / new injectors in the 160k, then now is the time.

Also has it ever had any history of injesting water? A slightly bent rod
will create exactly the symptoms you describe. (timing will be retarded on
that pot)

Radio pulls out easily, just press in and release each bar up the side-
they'll pop out. You'll need to open up the radio and be good with a
soldering iron when you have done. Bulbs are wire-ended that can be bought
from maplin /  CPC etc.

Dash clocks are bayonet minitures. You need to remove the top of the dash
(alittle more tricky if you have pass. airbag) and then the clocks to change
the bulbs. Change them all.

The Haynes manual shows how to do this quite well.

Notice if the sound dissapear when you press down and hold the brake pedal?
If that's the case - it is a worn vaccum pump or a vacuum leak in the vacuum
pump
circuit. Quite normal on a car with that milage.

smaller hand up behind
the instrument cluster to get the bajonet bulbs from the compartment
underneath. My hand is too
big but my wife managed to change 2 bulbs in the left side without problems.

Cheers again
