Hi All,
I've got a 1983 240gle which has been giving starting problems lately.
The engine just cranks without firing, eventually the battery goes
flat. A friend tested for an electric current and found that it was ok
to the solenoid and distributor but that there was none from the
distributor to the plugs. However if I spray some wd-40 into the
distributor and wait for a few hours, it starts. The problem used to
be on cold damp mornings but now even happens on dry days.
Anyone got an idea about this problem? Gave it to my mechanic but
everytime he seems to have no trouble. Thinking maybe because it is
not garaged in my place but in a carport.
Thanks
Joe

Not sure if this applies to your '83 240. I have a '90 sedan DL 240 that
had starting problems. The faulty part was located in the driver's side
in the engine compartment. There is a 30 amp fuse next to the headlight
relay and battery that gets corroded. I replaced the wire and fuse holder
and haven't had any problems since. I did get the car going by removing
the fuse and cleaning it with spray contact cleaner. It seems the battery
acid corroded the fuse holder and "ate" its way through the wiring. Jay

It's either fuel or fire.
Fire is easy to check. Next time it spins but doesn't start, pull a plug
wire, stick your finger in it and crank the motor. If it knocks you on
your bumper, it has spark.
Fuel pump relay is a likely suspect. It's in the passenger footwell,
behind the carpeting. $30.00 to replace or re solder the joints.
Fuel pump under the car, do you hear it buzz for a second when you crank
and release the key? (stick your head under the car, it's not that loud.)
My fuel pump was intermittent for a couple months before it quit for
good $180.00 towing from home...
google is your friend.
