Hi there,
I am in process of buying a second hand Volvo V70 T5 (2005) in Houston
USA.
The car has 40K mile on it. I looked at the CarFax report. It shows
the first owner put 38K clicks on it within one year, and the second
owner had it for one moth and added 2000 clicks. Close to 9 months car
was in Dealership before it was sold to the first owner, and three
months when it was out for resale in Houston.
The car looks great and is certified by Volvo dealership. I like the
car and its looks. However there are some concerns that I appreciate
if you can share your opinios
1- Don't you think that 40 K/year is too much for a car? Is this car
reliable even if it is certified by dealership?
2- I have noticed that Volvo discontinued V70 T5 (which is tubo charge
engine) as of 2006. Do you have any idea about the good/bad things of
Turbo engines? A dealer told me that tubo engines are proned to
failure often as they are under too much load.
My another option is to go with Lexus 2003 RX 300. The car does have
28K clicks and is certified. It looks great. BUT I like Volvo and its
known safety features. Any idea on this?
I appreciate your help.

With 40k the engine is just run-in.
I just bought a V70 D5 with 120K (miles) in 3 years. Runs like new....

The 40K is probably long distance highway driving (same w/ 120K in 3
years) - that kind of use is very easy on an engine.

I'd have little concern about the T5 --- it's a fantastic turbo on a
terrific engine. I never had any problem with mine in over 100K mi. I've
had several Volvo high-pressure turbos with never a problem --- SO LONG AS
THEY'RE MAINTAINED ON A REGULAR BASIS.
If the car you're looking at has primarily highway miles (and it would
almost have to with that many miles in the time you describe), and it's been
well-maintained, both the engine and turbo should be in good shape.

I had a Turbo 850 and from the day I got it ( around 65,000 miles, the turbo
had an annoying whine ( very noticeable)
but as it had a dealer 12 months parts warranty I wasn't too worried - I put
some 15,000 miles on it and it didn't get any worse, but I do believe it was
the start of it breaking..

Some turbos just whine, the one in my 240 has howled like a banshee for
years, I've always thought it sounded kinda cool.

Erm ... it's 'cool' to use slang and everything but you need to get it
_right_ in order to be effective. Miles are miles and 'clicks' are ...
_kilometres_ ! Not interchangeable.

That's klick. I meant click for odometer. Anyway, thanks for your
feedback.
