A friend gave me a well used 89 740 for my daughter's first car. It
quit on him a few times and he parked it. I trailered it home and it
started but ran rough. I replaced the plugs, wires, and the sensor on
the back of the bell housing. It ran better but I still want to change
the cap and rotor. Now it will not start at all. I pulled the fuel
pump relay and resoldered a few places and re-installed it. I can feel
the relay energize when I turn on the key but do not hear the pump. I
heard it the other day when I first worked on it but not now. Should a
crack a fuel line and see if it is pumping or what to try next. Thanks
for any help. Terry

You can pull the return hose off the back of the fuel pressure regulator
and crank it, see what that does. If you feel the relay energizing that
means that you probably have a spark and the engine wiring harness is
ok, do check for crumbling insulation though as that car is right on the
edge of the wiring update and may or may not have the newer non
deteriorating insulation.

Now the thing starts and I now can not make it duplicate the problem.
I may change the fuel pump relay just to try something. I pulled the
return line off the regulator and fuel is flowing really well out of
the return line.
